This new committee is a disaster for local democracy, certainly as far as it applies to the town of Hitchin. At the first meeting, two large contraversial planning applications, (at Grove Road and Walsworth Road) both of which had been refused permission by the former Hitchin Area Committee, were granted permission.
Local Hitchin councillors who all voted against were totally outvoted by councillors from other areas. Persumably the latter are only too pleased to have large housing quotas placed in Hitchin rather than their locality.
The question is, how are Hitchin residents going to respond?  |
